The opposite side of the Earth
I recently stumbled upon a collection of odd maps.
Many of them are rather US-centric, but a few of them are really interesting, such as the one on the right which shows what’s on the exact opposite side of the planet.
I also like this one which shows the distribution of the different types of electrical plugs.
The one for India and South Africa is actually the same as the one used in the UK until the mid-seventies. I remember when our house was rewired and the round-pin sockets replaced with square-pin. I followed the sparky around while he worked (if I annoyed him I didn’t let on). That was what first sparked my interest in all things electrical and electronic …
Argentina has the same colour as Aus/NZ in the map but even though the plug is the same, Live and Neutral are on opposite pins. Argentina also uses commonly uses the European plug.
Thailand’s wall sockets are North American style but because appliances here have every kind of plug under the sun, people plug in extension power boards with universal sockets — very useful for the traveller like me!
