Long drawing and

Google Translate normally does a decent job of translating my Danish blog postings, but it didn’t do a very good job with my recent Christmas duck posting…

I’ve put it all below and highlighted the worst bits.

My father and I spent each year this recipe from soc.culture.laos when we do juleand (thanks to Stig Bergmann):
Ducks should always consider the 3000 degrees or more, there is not much meat on the smaller ducks.
Second cleaned and rubbed in and outside with salt and pepper.
To fill purifies you and cut 3-4 apples into slices, it must be like Belle Boskop or even better, Cox Orange.
Mix the sliced apples with a handful of prunes without stones, close second with kødnåle.
Put the other on a roasting tin, the bird must turn breast side down.
Let the roast in a hot oven 130 degrees for 4 hours.

Then turn on the animal and let it cook finished in 2 hours.
It is so tender it barely be parties.
In the years have I come too late in time, so I had to screw up a bit of temperature.
Glædelig jul, i øvrigt! Merry Christmas, also!

The busiest Boxing Day sales ever show how bad the recession is

The newspapers are happily reporting that the Boxing Day sales have been the busiest ever.

They frame it in such positive language that they must think this is evidence the recession is coming to a close.

However, further down in the article, they point out that retail sales in December this year were even worse than last year.

They also point out that people are especially going for biggish investments such as laptops, TVs and appliances.

So my analysis is that the recession is hitting even harder than last year, which is why people didn’t buy much before Christmas.

Now they’re worried that the price of everything will rise once VAT goes up on 1st January, so lots of families are planning ahead and buying everything they’ll need over the next year or so now.

If I’m right, retail sales in January will be the worst ever, and the country will end up in the dreaded double-dip recession.

Servers for kids

I enjoyed this kiddie book:

It’s annoying that they mention Microsoft towards the end, but I guess that’s natural given that this book was published by them. Probably one of their better products! 🙂

Why don’t other companies make ads like this?

I can just imagine “Why my mum drives a Citroën”, “Our new fridge-freezer” and “How cavity wall insulation made our house happy”.

Let electoral law reflect what people think

In the UK, opinion polls tend to report percentages (such as Cons. 40%, Lab 28%, LibDem 22%, etc.), with an implicit understanding that these percentages will be reflected in the next parliament, and that the leader of the largest party will become prime minister.

However, the electoral system does not reflect this, given that it’s first-part-the-post, and the parties that have a chance to win any given constituency might not be the biggest national parties.

To see how broken the current system is, just have a look at the recent decision to exclude the SNP from televised party debates.

So perhaps it’s time to change the electoral system to better reflect what people expect?

For instance, introduce proper proportional representation for Westminster, so that 40% of the votes leads to close to 40% of the seats, and at the same time introduce a separate election for prime minister, perhaps along French lines, so that there is a run-off between the two strongest candidates from the first round.

I think people would very quickly get used to this – they might even after a few years start to think the new system had always been in place!
