Where can I buy 10 ml of rhubarb essence outwith Denmark?

The kids and I have a secret plan (actually it’s so secret that they don’t know of it yet!) to make boiled sweets (“bolsjer” in Danish) ourselves.

However, whereas it’s easy enough to get hold of sugar and other essential ingredients in the UK, finding suitable flavourings and colorants seems to be almost impossible unless I’m willing to buy them by the bucketload (500g seems to be the absolute minimum).

A few oils (peppermint, orange etc.) are available, but they seem to be mainly intended for aromatherapy, rather than for cooking.

However, Denmark seems to be full of places selling everything you need. For instance, Urtegaarden sells almost any flavouring you can dream of – pineapple, Bailey’s, cream, kiwi, cranberry, apple and many, many more. All of them in small bottles at reasonable prices.

Of course I can just order them in Denmark, but given the collapse in the value of the pound, I’d much rather find a local shop.

Do British people just never make their own sweets?

  • Never heard of /making/ sweets. Never really wondered where they come from. I think maybe they grow in factories somewhere. Certainly had no idea there might be extracts of actual plants in them. Does that make them part of your five a day?

    Then again sweets were almost no part of my childhood and despite my years in Scotland I’ve never acquired the Scottish addiction to refined sugar, so what do I know. ;-]

    Altså der er jo kageentusiaster (kagedekoration) en masse i Scotland og England,- måske kan disse butikker med grej til fanatiske kagedekoratører hjælpe/bestille hjem/sende dig videre i rigtige retning?

    Det foresvæver mig da, at der er en klassiker indenfor engelske(?) bolsjer; Rhubarb and Custard, og der må man da også bruge rabarberessens 😉

  • Hmm, kan du ikke bare koge nogle rabarber godt ind, så har du vel rabarber-smag?
    Sådan nogle findes der vel ovre hos jer???? .=)

    Ellers må du gerne få af vores en gang ved lejlighed – måske endda man kunne finde nogle frø til jer.

  • @Lykke, jeg tror, problemet er, at ingen private kunne drømme om at lave Rhubarb and Custard-bolsjer. Det site, du sendte et link til, er jo desværre ogsaa for virksomheder, saa jeg skal nok lade som om, jeg er professionel bolsjeproducent for at faa smagsprøver ud af dem.
    @Tine, tjoh, men planen var at lave dem før jul, men jeg kan jo nok faa lillesøster til at sende dem videre. Men det ændrer jo ikke paa, at de nok bliver meget dyrere, end hvis der havde været et tilsvarende britisk site.
    @Sebastian, rabarber har vi da selv i haven, men jeg er ikke sikker paa, man kan lave essens til bolsjekogning paa den maade. Og rabarber er ikke den eneste smag, jeg gerne ville have fingre i. 🙂

    Åh, så må du jo have fundet andre ingredienser at dyrke og udkoge smagen af.

    Vil i øvrigt MEGET gerne høre om erfaringer med bolchefremstilling – jeg har overvejet det ofte; men aldrig kommet videre ;(

  • Jeg har nu prøvet at bruge æblesaft og solbærsaft (reduceret), og smagen (men ikke farven) forsvinder stort set. Så jeg tror, der skal andre midler i brug!
