Evolution in the tropics

The Guardian has an interesting article about the reason why there are more species in the tropics. It turns out they evolve faster, probably because of a higher metabolism rate.

I’m not sure I believe it’s the main reason – my gut feeling is that the higher population density has more to do with it, but it does of course explain why the species are so different.
