Norwegian Boeing 737 landing at Madrid, Barajas
Originally uploaded by Bernardo Achirica

I discover the online comic strip XKCD today by reading Søren Mors’ status on Facebook. Very nerdy, and quite funny at times. This particular cartoon puzzles me, however. Would anybody not feel comfortable playing the word clitoris in a family context if it’s purely for the game’s sake? Am I just not repressed enough?

Debt is 400% of GDP

2008/12/11 22:42

dump the debt Originally uploaded by Daveybot Fraser Nelson is blogging that the UK’s total debt now exceeds 400%. This is far higher than any other G7 country – do check the graph in his posting. To make it even worse, most of it is short-term debt (second graph). These figures are so enormous that I can’t even begin to comprehend what the consequences are going to be. An IMF bail-out?

A blind spot

Pound & Euro Originally uploaded by ~ PaulG ~ What is it about the EU that makes many otherwise intelligent Tories switch off their brain when they have to discuss this topic? As regular readers of this blog will know, I often find Fraser Nelson’s comments on the Spectator Coffehouse Blog both informative and thoughtful. This is also true for this blog posting, in which he discusses the recent collapse in the value of the pound. He points out that their is not much manufacturing left in […]

Umami

Umami Tasting Menu Asian Bangers and Mash Originally uploaded by edseloh There’s a good article about umami in The Guardian today. It points out that MSG is the cheapest and simplest way to get umami, but by no ways the only one. This is excellent news for people like me who suspect they’re allergic to MSG! Key common ingredients rich in umami include fish, such as sardines (glutamate 280mg/100g and inosinate 193mg/100g) or mackerel (inosinate 215mg/100), meats such cured hams (glutamate 337mg/100g) and vegetables including ripe tomatoes […]

He should throw himself in gaol!

2008/12/02 23:43

As most other people, I’m totally horrified and appalled by the way the government let anti-terror police deal with an opposition spokesman who was just doing his job. If they think that kind of behaviour should carry a gaol sentence, perhaps the Prime Minister would like to lock up himself first? (Thanks to Guido Fawkes for the link.)

Ubuntu for two

2008/11/25 23:58

Det obligatoriske "Ubuntu kan bare nogen fine ting"-billede Originally uploaded by bosworth.dk Marcel seems to think that computers are for downloading random programs from the Internet, preferably without an up-to-date anti-virus program. So of course his computer (running Windows XP) got very, very ill. I managed to clean it, but unfortunately this left many programs broken. Our only set of XP CDs didn’t work on his 64-bit computer, so in an act of desperation I wiped his harddisk clean and installed Ubuntu Linux on it instead. Surprisingly, […]

The H5N1 Virus [snag] Originally uploaded by Quiplash!

Pension apartheid

2008/12/09 21:09

Pensioner Originally uploaded by hoveringdog Mary Dejevsky has written an excellent article about pensions in The Independent. She points out that private pensions are getting worse and worse: “With most private pension funds invested, one way or another, in the stock market, their value has collapsed.” On the other hand, people in the public sector can expect great pensions on top of salaries that are now often better than those in the private sector. I very much agree with her conclusion: Mr Cameron is right that this […]

Obama wants the UK within the EU

2008/12/04 23:48

Obama 2008 Presidential Campaign Originally uploaded by Barack Obama There’s a must-read article in New Statesman about Obama and the Tories. It basically claims that Obama wants the UK to remain within a strong EU, and that this of course is at odds with the Tories’ hostile attitude towards Europe. A few quotes Obama began by saying that he hoped to work closely with the EU. But, in a crude attempt to demonstrate his Atlanticist credentials, Cameron went on to indulge in what one source has described […]

Music store for Linux

2008/12/04 23:27

I decided to test out Amazon’s new MP3 shop today. Their page recommended downloading a helper application. I already braced myself for the ubiquitous “Windows only”, but not this time! Amazon actually supply their helper also for Linux (even in four variants: Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora and OpenSUSE). So after installing the helper application, it all worked absolutely beautifully, and Phyllis is now singing along happily.

Thai food

2008/11/30 23:19

Last Friday, we had Phyllis’s brother and his wife round for dinner. I decided to cook a bit of Thai food, using my favourite Thai cookbook: Thailand: The Beautiful Cookbook. At first, I was thinking about cooking just a curry, but I then read its section on composing a meal: “Most often, in addition to the obligatory bowl of rice, there will be a soup of some kind, a curry, a steamed dish, a fried one, a sald, and one or more of the basic sauces.” That […]

We’d rather have had £1230

2008/11/25 23:42

Tax Return Check from Hell Originally uploaded by mercyskye The temporary VAT reduction from 17.5% to 15% is estimated to cost £12.5bn. I doubt it’ll have much of an effect – I’m definitely not going to splash out on huge Christmas presents just because prices come down by 2.13%. Also, lots of shops have significant problems already, and they’re not going to pass on the 2.13% if they can help it. Sure, many of them will have to reduce their prices to attract customers, but they would’ve […]
