When I die…

2007/05/03 21:45

I found this brilliant cartoon on Stephen Pollard’s blog on the website of The Spectator.

It’s just so spot-on – it’s exactly how a blogger’s mind works.

Election day

2007/05/02 22:45

I Voted Originally uploaded by stickerbandit. Election day is only eight and a half hours away now. The day we celebrate democracy! I personally hope Scotland will be ruled by an SNP/LibDem coalition after this election, and that Labour loses power in Glasgow, too. The best website for the Scottish election is probably Scotland Votes, and Vote Scotland for information about how to vote.

Phyllis in Culzean Originally uploaded by viralbus. What is it about Scottish people that makes them believe the sea won’t be cold in April? They all seemed to jumping around in it, not just Phyllis. It’s Arran on the horizon, btw.

Republik nu!

2007/04/23 22:04

Støt kampen for […]

Negative campaigning

2007/04/20 23:14

Compared to Danish elections campaigns, the British ones are typically very negative. I can understand it makes good sense in a two-party system using first-past-the-post. However, I fail two see it really works when there are more than two parties with a chance of getting elected, and in particular with a proportional system like the one used for the Scottish Parliament. Just look at the photo here: It’s quite clear that something horrible will happen, and if you read the text underneath, it’s also clear that the […]

Escaping alarm clock

2007/04/17 22:29

I saw this alarm clock mentioned on /. today. According to the page, it’s “[t]he alarm clock that runs away and hides when you don’t wake up. […] [I]f you snooze, Clocky will jump off of your nightstand and wheel around your room looking for a place to hide.” How cool is that? It costs £25 (DKK 275), but unfortunately, the website only delivers to the US and Canada. 🙁

Not a day to celebrate

2007/05/01 12:37

Union Jack Originally uploaded by Orange Sweets. Where are the flags? Why is today not a bank holiday in Great Britain? Today is the 300th anniversary of the Act of Union between England (with Wales) and Scotland. If it’s such a great thing as the unionist parties proclaim, surely they should be out there celebrating it. Instead, all is quiet. There’s nothing at all in the online edition of The Scotsman, and only a small article or two in slightly less unionist The Herald. Most of the […]

High time to join the euro

2007/04/30 22:02

When I moved to Scotland five years ago, all the newspapers were full of stuff about whether the UK should replace the pound with the euro, but nobody seems to mention it any more. I have the feeling people are quietly feeling happy and smug that the UK didn’t join, but I really don’t understand it. The interest rate in the Eurozone is 3.75% at the moment, while it in the UK is 5.25% and about to rise. Ever since the euro was introduced eight years ago, […]

If we hadn’t abolished the gold standard

2007/04/28 00:02

My recent posting about the gold standard was perhaps a bit theoretical. I’ve now tried to work out exactly what the pound, the Scandinavian crown and the American dollar would have been worth today if they had still followed the link to the price of gold: Gold standard Modern pound Modern Danish crown 1£ (pound) £87.32 DKK 953.50 1s (shilling) = 1/20 £ £4.37 DKK 47.75 1d (penny) = 1/12 s £0.36 DKK 4.00 1g (guinea) = 1£ 1s £91.69 DKK 1001.25 1 crown = 5s £21.83 […]

Svensk for danskere

2007/04/26 06:56

swedish flag proportions Originally uploaded by georgeaye.

Rucksack days

2007/04/22 22:38

jogging in a rucksack Originally uploaded by phyl1. We bought a back carrier in Mothercare yesterday. They had two identical ones in different packaging. It turned out one was the old packaging and the other one was the new one, and they sold at the old price of £29.99 (DKK 329) and the new price of £39.99 (DKK 439), respectively. No prize for guessing which one we bought! Pudge was a bit sceptical at first, but he quickly learned to love it because it gives him such […]

Gold

2007/04/19 23:28

gold coins Originally uploaded by technicolor. In the old days before the gold standard was abandoned, one ounce of gold cost £3 17s 10.5d, or US$20.67, or 77.18 Scandinavian crowns. That shows something about the inflation that has taken place since then. These days, a troy ounce costs £341, or US $683, or DKK 3740. Perhaps I should go out and buy some gold…
