Víkíngar!?!?

2009/08/05 08:31

Vikingar Originally uploaded by PhylB When we were in Largs recently (it’s a nice place to go for an ice cream), we passed the local Viking museum, which is there to celebrate the rôle of the Vikings in Scotland. However, when I noticed the sign over the front door, I nearly choked on my lovely ice cream. They had written “Víkíngar!” instead of “Víkingar!”. Having studied Old Norse in my first term at university, I know a bit about that language. The word víkingr is a derivation […]

How to peel a banana

2009/07/26 22:47

When I encountered this video a few days ago, I thought it was a joke. However, I’ve now opened several bananas in this way over the last few days, and it really is much easier! It’s just annoying that the wee dark thorn-shaped thing remains stuck in the end (or rather, top) of the banana.

Blog this to draft

2009/07/24 08:00

Blogging For Dummies Originally uploaded by Somewhat Frank I normally write blog postings by finding a nice Creative Commons-licensed photo on Flickr and using the Blog this button above it. However, the consequence is that it appears on my blog immediately, without giving me the chance to proof-read it or anything. It would be much better if the blog postings could end up in the Draft folder at first. I was searching for a plugin to achieve this on the WordPress plugin site, but to no avail. […]

Third time lucky

2009/07/20 17:16

driving test pass certificate Originally uploaded by Davey Brown Today is a great day: It’s 40 years since man first set foot on the Moon, and I finally passed my driving test! It was my third attempt: The first time I overlooked an unmarked junction, and the second time I was being so careful not to do the same again that I failed for being excessively cautious. But today everything went smoothly – I only picked up two driving faults, which is really good (you’re allowed up […]

Den vigtigste grundlovsændring

2009/07/17 23:19

The main building of the European Parliament in Brussels from inside Originally uploaded by European Parliament Things are not going as planned for the Tories in the European Parliament. I had considered blogging it earlier, but at first they seemed to manage to control the more extreme parts of their coalition fairly well. However, the fact that they have members running against themselves and as a result end up being led by a member of PiS shows the danger of their chosen strategy. Do read the article!

Den forsinkede bryllupsfest

2009/08/01 01:23

Just like the 1930s

2009/07/24 23:49

There’s a wonderful graph illustrating an article in a Telegraph blog today. It compares four different recessions from a UK perspective, and the current one is clearly much closer to the 1930s recession (and to a certain extent the 1980s one), and it’s much worse than the relatively mild 1990s one. We’re the black line (click on the graph for a bigger version), so make your own conclusions!

Married, but not allowed to live together

2009/07/23 23:54

Chris & Jessica Engagement – Falling Originally uploaded by Auzigog When the current Danish government got into power in 2002, one of their first actions was to introduce the so-called 24-year rule, which means you can’t bring your lawfully wedded husband or wife to Denmark from outside the EU if you’re younger than 24. Although theoretically introduced to reduce the number of forced marriages, it has had lots of negative consequences for young married couples that actually are in love. It seems that the UK has now […]

Getting married at your child’s baptism

2009/07/22 23:57

The newly-wed coupleand their newly-christened daughter Originally uploaded by viralbus I just read in The Times that the Church of England is now introducing a wedding-cum-baptism ritual. In Denmark that is entirely commonplace, and I mentioned my surprise to Phyllis that this should be anything new. According to her, it is entirely new over here, and the Danish practice is very strange, because the Church is supposed to say that you should marry before you even conceive a child, let alone give birth to it and baptise […]

How to pass your driving test

2009/07/19 12:52

I ordered some instructional DVDs from the DSA some time ago, and one of them contained the brilliant film from 1935 about how to pass your driving test: I already feel much more confident that I’ll pass!

When Harry and Sally made a porno

2009/07/17 09:55

Phyllis and I have watched two movies in the past week (you can tell the telly-watcher-in-residence, a.k.a. Marcel, is away :-)!). The first one was When Harry Met Sally, which is probably by now a classic. It’s basically about a man and a woman who are best friends and then fall in love and about how hard the transition from friends to lovers is. Last night we then watched Zach and Miri Make a Porno, which I had been expecting to be something along the lines of […]

Marriage

2009/07/15 22:06

"Divorce parties"? Originally uploaded by wwhyte1968 Phyllis has been ranting about divorces again. 🙂 In connexion with this blog posting, we were discussing alternatives over lunch the other day, and I suggested that perhaps marriage (and divorce) should simply not be recognised by the state. What I mean is that people would of course be free to marry if they chose to, but it would not lead to any change in legal status, in the same way as the state doesn’t care whether you’ve got confirmed in […]

A slow-moving pandemic?

2009/07/13 22:45

Newsboys wearing masks during the 1918 flu pandemic Originally uploaded by Quiplash! The Scotsman claims today that the government is planning to vaccinate the entire UK population against swine flu. That might turn out to be a wise decision, but I’m a bit concerned about the timescale: The last people won’t get their flu jab till November 2010. I’m not sure it can be done any sooner, but if it turns out to be a fast-moving pandemic, I presume half the population might be dead before the […]
