Un tracteur des herbes

Please, Keep Off the Grass Originally uploaded by OnTheLam I had a dream last night. I was in France, in a place with mountains close to the sea. I walked up to a big Citroën, where two old guys were standing talking to a young one. The young one asked me in English to wait there while he got a lawn mower that needed to go into the car. As soon as he had left, the old guys and I got into the car and drove away. […]

One member, five votes

2008/09/10 22:13

labour comference aplause Originally uploaded by Labour Youth Labour is a bizarre party: If you are seeking a source of innocent merriment, ask your Labour MSPs how many votes they have in [the Scottish leadership] contest. The top total I’ve discerned so far is five. Here’s how that breaks down. Labour MSP – one vote. Co-op MSP – one vote. Union member – one vote. Party member – one vote. Affiliated society, such as the Fabians – or the Socialist Health Association – one vote. Five in […]

Bad translation prolonging the Russo-Georgian war

2008/09/08 21:57

You Are Entering The American Sector Originally uploaded by notanyron There’s an interesting article today in The Telegraph about how bad translations from the French original has prolonged the war in Georgia: One reason for the continuation of the conflict now appears to be a passage in the Russian translation of the agreement that speaks of security “for” South Ossetia and Abkhazia. The English version speaks of security “in” the two areas. The difference is crucial, because Russia continues to keep its tanks and armed troops “in” […]

Bristol’s first or second child?

2008/09/01 23:37

Telltale Originally uploaded by lonelysandwich Sarah Palin’s announcement that her daughter Bristol is pregnant seems to have convinced some bloggers that Trig must then have been Sarah’s, not Bristol’s, as many used to think. However, Phyllis and I have been discussing this a lot, and we think the following points need to be addressed before we are convinced: Why were all family photos of Sarah and Bristol taken during the pregnancy leading to Trig’s birth removed from the servers over the weekend? Why are there no photos […]

Whose son?

2008/08/31 23:08

There are lots of rumours on the Internet at the moment saying that Sarah Palin’s fifth child cannot possibly be hers but must be her 16-years-old daughter’s instead. For instance: Personally, I couldn’t care less if her daughter had a baby, but I do care about honesty. If she’s prepared to arrange such an elaborate cover-up, what else would she be prepared to do?

Does equality breed conservatism?

2008/09/09 21:56

There’s an article in the New York Times today. Most of it is to US-centric to be of great relevance here, but this paragraph made me think: Measured by money income, Washington qualifies as one the most unequal cities in the United States. Yet these two very different halves of a single city do share at least one thing. They vote the same way: Democratic. And in this, we are not alone. As a general rule, the more unequal a place is, the more Democratic; the more […]

Radio-controlled pocket watches

Those strange Finns

2008/09/03 21:49

There’s an article in Videnskab (in Danish) about some researchers who’ve made a genetic map of Europe. It shows that Finns very much are the odd man out, but the Italians and to a certain extent the English also display some differences. Unfortunately, they haven’t sampled any Scots. And I wonder where Anna would show up, with her mixture of Scottish, Danish and South German genes – would she look Dutch? 😉 Given that Finnish is a non-Indoeuropean language, I’m not overly surprised that they’re genetically different, […]

Why are they talking about Gustav?

2008/09/01 22:43

2005-8-25 Hurricane Katrina Originally uploaded by tiswango Hurricane Katrina was an important news story in many ways, not least because it came as a partial surprise. This time the media seem to have decided not to be surprised again, and they seem all to have placed tons of reporters in Louisiana. However, Gustav is now only a Category-1 hurricane, and while I would expect that to be reported if it happened in Scotland, I really don’t expect to hear about such minor event if they happen abroad. Apocalyptic burritos

2008/08/31 13:34

Burritos Originally uploaded by shredpet501 I found this recipe in the Danish newspaper Politiken (22nd October 1995), and it soon became a favourite of both my sister Miriam and myself. It’s one of those few veggie dishes that you don’t want to add any meat to – it’s perfectly balanced and complete in itself. Here’s the recipe for two people: Salsa: Chop ½ largish salad onion, 2 tomatoes, 1 clove of garlic, 3–7 chilis (according to taste) and 2 twigs fresh coriander. Add 1 tsp ground coriander […]
