Marcel’s old computer saved by Ubuntu

2007/01/18 09:04

Marcel’s old computer
Originally uploaded by viralbus.

Marcel’s old computer from the house had some problems, so Phyllis brought it to the flat and I installed Ubuntu Linux on it.
I can’t get its wireless card to work, however, so I had to place it next to the router. 🙁
I’m blogging this from it.

The Danish police

2006/12/18 22:56

Google has a function that allows you to find web pages similar to a given one. For instance, here is their list of pages similar to this blog. Many of the links there are very relevant: Some are the pages of friends (Palle, Hotdog, MW, Mailund, Sebastian), and some are pages of organisations or resources I’m either involved with or have an interest in (DK-TUG, DSN, FIDUSO, ODS), but some of them are just plain weird – Bones Family Restaurants (I’ve never ever eaten there), houses in […]

Temporary email addresses

2006/11/29 23:01

Slashdot were running a story about 10 Minute Mail today. Basically, it’s a web page that gives you an email address that only lasts ten minutes. It’s extremely useful because lots of other web sites requires you to provide an email address, but you can’t be sure they won’t spam you later. Also, to get a permanent email address with Yahoo! or Hotmail or whoever, you normally need to provide a valid email address to get started, so this provides a nice starting point. However, this also […]

Bibulus

2006/08/09 20:10

I realised today that I’ve hardly touched Bibulus for more than two years. Of course there are good (and not so good) reasons why I haven’t spent time on it, but it is a shame – it was quite close to becoming useful. I hope I’ll get a chance to resurrect it before too long…

Sebastians weblog: Hør en bog

2006/08/05 13:45

Parrot

2006/07/10 20:54

I just downloaded Parrot 0.4.5 from parrotcode.org. I have a great urge to write an Amstrad Basic compiler for it – that would really make me feel young – the first programming language I ever learnt!

House printer

2007/01/15 22:45

According to this article, a machine that allows a computer to build a house using gypsum and concrete – basically a house printer – has now been invented. It sounds really cool, but as somebody asked on Slashdot: How does such a machine build flat roofs and other structures that are not supported from beneath? The video beneath seems to indicate it puts in beams first, but surely that’s not always wanted. Anyway, while this is a wonderful first step – perhaps we’ll all soon live in […]

Another war to be won by porn

2007/01/13 11:33

Several online media (e.g., The Guardian Technology Blog) are reporting that the porn industry has now firmly decided on HD DVD instead Blu-ray as the successor to the DVD format. (Sony might have brought this onto themselves by not allowing porn on Blu-ray, but this seems to be just a rumour.) There is plenty of evidence that adoption of new technology is largely driven by porn (photography, video, the Internet etc.), so this makes it very likely HD DVD will eventually win over Blu-ray, even for non-pornographic […]

blazon2jpeg

2006/12/06 22:28

Some months ago, I spent a bit of my spare time reading up a bit on the language of blazonry and the fundamental rules of heraldry. I find it linguistically fascinating how English blazonry is still in a language closer to Norman French than modern English. For instance, the central part of the arms of the Clan Buchanan is described as “or, a lion rampant sable, armed and langued gules” rather than “on a yellow background, a black lion with red tongue and claws standing on its […]

Anhypostatic headache

2006/11/20 21:32

My dad is very fond of googlewhacks. He has now even found a nearly fool-proof way of generating them: Ich habe heute ein google-whack entdeckt, und fast so was wie eine g.w.machine. Wenn man theologische Spezialausdrücke und Krankheiten kombiniert, kommt man oft auf ganz wenige Lösungen. Anhypostatic headache ergibt 1 von 1.

Racter

2006/10/08 23:22

While tidying up my books, I found a long-lost photocopy of The Policeman’s Beard Is Half Constructed, poetry that the author claimed was written by a computer program, Racter, although it seems likely he edited it heavily. No matter how the poems came about, I find some of them strangely beautiful. One of my favourites is this: More than iron, more than lead, more than gold I need electricity.I need it more than I need lamb or pork or lettuce or cucumber.I need it for my dreams […]

La madonna che conduce la macchina

2006/08/07 20:37

There’s a church in Bibbiena in which one of the madonnas has had her baby Jesus stolen. Unfortunately, the way she’s holding her hands makes it look as if she’s driving a car, not holding a baby, so I renamed her mentally to la madonna che conduce la macchina. 🙂 It just a shame I had forgotten my camera that day – this posting would have looked so much better with an illustration… Interestingly, the next day we went to the museum in Arezzo to look at […]

Wormsoapy cock poetry

2006/08/04 08:27

I bought a passaverdura in Italy. In Italian, it reasonably enough tells me to “lavare bene prima dell’uso” – which in English has become “before first use, wash in wormsoapy water”. That reminds me of a friend of my dad, Ötz, who wanted to buy a gasket for his tap. In German, a gasket is called a Dichtung, and Hahn means both tap and cock, so he reportedly asked for una poesia di gallo d’acqua!

Trine Revival Club

2006/08/02 20:58

Vi er en del Århus-dataloger, der lærte Trine som det første programmeringssprog på studiet (det andet, hvis man tæller Rasmus med). Trine døde sidst i 90erne, da man gik over til java i stedet.

Server move

2006/06/10 15:23

Yesterday, my homepage and blog went down. This morning, I emailed Yanet to ask what was wrong. It turned out that there were so few people left on the machine I was on that it had been classified as unused and removed. 🙁 I was therefore recreated on a new machine and had my files reinstalled from back-up. The new server is very nice and gives me more opportunities to create subdomains, but it’s irritating to be forced to move on the only day of the year […]
