Marcel’s old computer saved by Ubuntu

Marcel’s old computer
Originally uploaded by viralbus.

Marcel’s old computer from the house had some problems, so Phyllis brought it to the flat and I installed Ubuntu Linux on it.
I can’t get its wireless card to work, however, so I had to place it next to the router. 🙁
I’m blogging this from it.

Another sign

beware of the luggage monster Originally uploaded by YanivG. I’ve found another bizarre sign on Flickr. What is this one supposed to mean? That it’s prohibited to hang one’s luggage on a hook? That the arm of luggage-carrying beams shouldn’t be too long? That one should carry one’s own luggage rather than using tools for it?

The West Lothian question (I)

2007/01/14 21:21

On Tuesday (16/1), it’s exactly 300 years since the Act of Union between Scotland and England was ratified (taking effect on 1st May). This has of course prompted a lot of newspaper columns to be written about the likelihood of Scottish Independence and so on. Another related topic that was discussed in the Sunday Herald today was the West Lothian question. One aspect of this that I’ve never seen discussed but which I nevertheless find important is this: When the Scottish parliament was created, the number of […]

Can you hold a spoon with your nose?

Charlotte taught me how to hold a spoon with my nose while we were on Christmas holiday in Denmark. It looks cool, no?

I took a break from blogging while on holiday in Denmark with Phyllis, Marcel, Charlotte and Léon, and since we came back I’ve been busy unpacking and lying in bed with a vomiting bug, but I should now be ready to blog again! I apologise for the delay.

House printer

2007/01/15 22:45

According to this article, a machine that allows a computer to build a house using gypsum and concrete – basically a house printer – has now been invented. It sounds really cool, but as somebody asked on Slashdot: How does such a machine build flat roofs and other structures that are not supported from beneath? The video beneath seems to indicate it puts in beams first, but surely that’s not always wanted. Anyway, while this is a wonderful first step – perhaps we’ll all soon live in […]

Being bilingual keeps you young

2007/01/14 22:06

According to new research from Canada, “people who are fully bilingual and speak both languages every day for most of their lives can delay the onset of dementia by up to four years compared with those who only know one language”. I wonder whether using more than two languages helps even more! 😉

Another war to be won by porn

2007/01/13 11:33

Several online media (e.g., The Guardian Technology Blog) are reporting that the porn industry has now firmly decided on HD DVD instead Blu-ray as the successor to the DVD format. (Sony might have brought this onto themselves by not allowing porn on Blu-ray, but this seems to be just a rumour.) There is plenty of evidence that adoption of new technology is largely driven by porn (photography, video, the Internet etc.), so this makes it very likely HD DVD will eventually win over Blu-ray, even for non-pornographic […]

Bro via Samsø

Jeg faldt over denne artikel i Jyllands-Posten, som handler om, at nogle gutter fra FRI vil bygge en bro fra Østjylland til Sjælland via Samsø.
