How to tell if you’re European

2006/09/19 22:31

I just had a look at my old European culture test. I wrote it before I moved to Scotland, and I must admit that some of my generalisations don’t hold in this country. I still think much of it is fine, though.

Just a shame Mark Rosenfelder didn’t want to add it to his list… 🙁

Hvad betyder karaktersystemet for flid og fokus?

2006/09/18 21:47

Tighter

2006/09/17 20:21

I’m currently following the Swedish parliamentary election. At the moment, it seems to be much tighter than the opinion polls had predicted. We seem to be seeing a lot of very close elections these days (Denmark 1998, USA 2000, Germany 2002, Italy 2006 and many more). I’m wondering what’s going on… Are people changing their minds after reading the opinion polls? (That is, “Oh, so Moderaterna are winning? I’ll vote for somebody else then!”) Or are all the spin-doctors in all parties just so good at influencing […]

Where to go for cold winters or thunderstorms

2006/09/17 12:51

I stumbled upon a page called “Where is the best place to go for weather in Britain?“. It’s a rather nice summary of the weather of the UK. I definitely don’t live in the right place weatherwise. 🙁

Bjørnebanden er hunde!

2006/09/16 21:42

Musiksmag og kriminalitet

2006/09/15 14:19

The languages I once knew

2006/09/18 23:12

I was looking for a recipe for ajapsandali in my recipe collection, and I stumbled upon a recipe for shchi that I had written down while I studied Russian in St. Petersburg in the summer of 1994. Of course I didn’t compose it myself, but as far as remember, Tania was dictating it to me in her kitchen. I always feel it’s fascinating to find texts I wrote in languages that I have since then not used much. I can see it’s my handwriting, but it’s flowing […]

New office

My office Originally uploaded by viralbus. I moved to a new office at work last week. It’s actually a very nice office, with lots of sun in the afternoon, and with enough space to put up my miniature basketball game. It has two drawbacks, though: First, I might finally have an office with a view, but it’s a view of the carpark, not the Campsies. Second, it lacks the world’s best office mate. 🙁

Fan charts

2006/09/17 18:49

Gramps, the genealogy program I’m using, has a nice option for producing fan charts. (It’s just a shame it isn’t better at fitting the texts into the fields.) I like the fact that two fan charts can be fitted together when one marries to produce a full circle. 🙂

Milk colour coding

2006/09/17 18:14

In Denmark, skimmed milk packaging is grey, semi-skimmed is light blue, full-fat is dark blue, and whipping cream is red. In the UK, skimmed milk is red, semi-skimmed is green, full-fat is dark blue, single cream is red, and whipping cream is green. I’ve forgotten the colour coding schemes used in other countries, but I’m sure they’re different, too. When were the colour schemes invented? Were they regional at first, and then harmonised on a national level?

Ever since I studied Georgian in Georgia (1996-97), I’ve been missing the wonderful Georgian wine. It’s ubiquitous in Georgia, and it’s extremely widespread in Russia too, but in western Europe, one hardly ever sees it. There are a few online shops that sell it, such as Fareham Wine Cellar in the UK and Gourmatis in Germany, but it’s hardly a huge selection that is available there, and it is annoying not being able to buy wine locally. I wish I could do something do bring Georgian wines […]

Are You Dave Gorman?

2006/09/15 13:58

Dave Gorman, one of the funniest people in the world, and a fine amateur photographer, has now announced that “a DVD of the series The Dave Gorman Collection a.k.a Are You Dave Gorman? will be released at the end of October.” It can be pre-ordered exclusively via a link from his website. Now all I’m waiting for is for his important astrology experiment to be released, too.
