Jeg fandt lige et site, hvor man kan indtaste sit navn fonetisk og få det at se i hieroglyffer!

Musiksmag og kriminalitet

2006/09/15 14:19

Close but no cigar (yet)

2006/09/11 19:30

Three weeks ago, I finally ordered a Sony ?100 from DigitalKind. At the time, the camera wasn’t in stock, but they promised they would deliver it by the end of the month. However, the end of August arrived, but the camera didn’t. Byron from the company told me: Unfortunately I can’t guarantee any of the dates, as these are ETA’s given to us by the manufacturer. It may be early, it may be on time, and it may of course be delayed again. It’s an annoying lottery. […]

Back from Turin

2006/09/09 09:16

I got back from Turin last night. What a difference! In Turin, it was extremely hot and humid all the time, but here in Scotland, it’s freezing cold and crisp. The conference was very good – I heard about several interesting developments and met plenty of people. For instance, Gyldendal had sent their entire dictionary department – it was quite nice speaking Danish again… There were also loads of Irish people speaking Irish – it certainly didn’t appear to be a small or endangered language at all. […]

Microphones & aspirated consonants

2006/09/08 11:22

During Euralex, I’ve noticed how the microphones don’t cope well with aspirated consonants. They’re fine when people speak Italian or French into them, but give them English or Danish, and all the initial /p/s, /t/s and /k/s have unpleasant acustic effects when the puff of air reaches the microphone.

Pork & apple sausage rolls

2006/09/04 19:05

I’ve never been a great fan of sausage rolls – they’ve always seemed too heavy and greasy, something that could be used to quell the hunger till I got home from the supermarket, but not anything to eat for pleasure. So I really have to applaud Tesco’s new pork & apple sausage rolls. It seems the only difference is the addition of dried apple pieces to the sausage meat, but what a difference! Suddenly it’s slightly sweet, slightly spicy, elegant, heavenly…

Are You Dave Gorman?

2006/09/15 13:58

Dave Gorman, one of the funniest people in the world, and a fine amateur photographer, has now announced that “a DVD of the series The Dave Gorman Collection a.k.a Are You Dave Gorman? will be released at the end of October.” It can be pre-ordered exclusively via a link from his website. Now all I’m waiting for is for his important astrology experiment to be released, too.

Hieroglyphics

2006/09/10 19:07

In Turin, I spent a couple of hours visiting the Egyptian Museum, the largest outside Egypt (that is, better that the British Museum). It was a fantastic experience – it was so huge and so comprehensive that I got a strong feeling of a lost world, and I left impressed and depressed. Perhaps the most depressing bit was the huge amounts of Egyptian texts in hieroglyphics. If only I had studied a bit of Egyptian with Tine and Rasmus when I was still at university, I might […]

Plastic food and cow tools

2006/09/10 18:22

I don’t know why, but the photo on the right of Phyllis’s daughter Charlotte immediately reminded me of Gary Larson’s famous Cow Tools. (Click on the cartoon to read a biographical article about him in Salon, btw.) I don’t know exactly why… Is it their facial expressions – half proud, half clueless? Is it the uselessness of the items in front of them? Is it the absurdity of the set-up? I don’t know, but I know that the two pictures bring up exactly the same emotions in […]

PVC-test

2006/09/09 16:08

I en artikel i Politiken fandt jeg lige flg. test, hvis man vil undersøge, om et produkt er lavet af PVC: »Varm en kobbertråd over en flamme og læg den varme tråd mod legetøjet, så noget af plasten smelter. Stik derefter kobbertråden ind i flammen igen. Hvis flammen bliver grøn, er sexlegetøjet af pvc«.

Euralex

2006/09/08 09:23

I’m currently at the Euralex conference in Turin (Piemonte). Yesterday I presented a paper (“A Bilingual Corpus for Lexicographers”) together with Sabine. It went very well – there was a huge audience, and lots of people have been asking us questions afterwards. I’ll write more once I’m back in Glasgow.

Great Circle Mapper

I’ve found a great new toy, the Great Circle Mapper. It allows you to enter airports, and it’ll draw the shortest routes between them, taking into account the shape of the Earth. On the map on the left, I’ve got it to plot the routes to Auckland from Glasgow, Reykjavík and Granada. I like the route from Glasgow especially! 🙂
