I’m working at home, waiting for the Dishwasher Repair Man to come by. I feel rather like one of the supermen in Monty Python sketch about the Bicycle Repair Man – I can do almost anything at all in my kitchen, but I’m left helpless when my dishwasher breaks down.

There was a reassuring article in The Herald this morning: When it comes to property, it seems Scots still prefer the mature sandstone look over more contemporary homes. Pizza

Just ordered a pizza from Domino’s. I don’t know why I do it – sure, they’re better than the ones from the local chippie, but they’re ridiculously expensive. Is it just because I can avoid leaving my flat and avoid using the phone? I guess so – I hate calling people, and I don’t fancy walking all the way down to Pizza Hut. But it is a silly way to waste money.

Disappearing space characters

Strange – when I post by sending an email, Blogger seems to throw away some spaces in the subject line, possibly in connexion with non-ASCII characters. For instance, ‘have været hjemme’ became ‘haveværethjemme’, and ‘Status på’ became ‘Statuspå’. Odd!

Park surfing

I’m writing this from the park in Rose Street, just a few buildings from my flat. I had hoped my wireless network would be available, but I cannot find it. Fortunately, however, I’ve found several unsecured ones I can use instead. The signal strength isn’t great, but at least it’s working. It’s really great – surfing the net is so much nicer in the sun with running water on both sides.

The dishwasher repairman just left. Alas, he couldn’t fix it – he said it was the control chip which needs to be replaced, so another DWRM will be round next week to do that.

Evolution in the tropics

The Guardian has an interesting article about the reason why there are more species in the tropics. It turns out they evolve faster, probably because of a higher metabolism rate. I’m not sure I believe it’s the main reason – my gut feeling is that the higher population density has more to do with it, but it does of course explain why the species are so different.

Nu ville jeg have været hjemme igen

Hvis jeg ikke havde fået halsbetændelse eller hvad det nu var, der lagde mig ned i fredag, og jeg derfor var taget til Oxford for at drikke øl med Mailund og Peter JC, ville jeg nu have været hjemme igen. Det var surt at gå glip af, men jeg var ikke meget værd i lørdags, så det var nok godt nok, jeg blev hjemme. Peter sendte en SMS om, at de havde haft det sjovt alligevel – og det er jo godt nok!
